How UEFA Reduced Food Emissions at 2024 Champions League Final

In partnership with UEFA and Just Eat Takeaway.com, My Emissions carbon labelled the menu boards at and around the 2024 UEFA Champions League Final.

Carbon labelling the 2024 UEFA Champions League Final

In partnership with UEFA and Just Eat Takeaway.com, My Emissions was asked to find ways to reduce food emissions for the 2024 Champions League Final.

The Champions League Final is one of the largest annual sporting events in the world. And with 86,000 fans watching the final at Wembley Stadium and over 100,000 meals served on the day, the opportunity for impact was huge.

The project – part of the inaugural ‘Champions Innovate’ programme (an innovation scheme connecting start-ups with UEFA) – tasked us to find ways to deliver healthy and sustainable food to fans.

Our solution: carbon labelling the menu boards at Wembley Stadium and 25+ food trucks at various ‘fan festival’ sites across London saw My Emissions win the €45K Champions Innovate prize.

Automatic Carbon Calculations for Wembley Stadium…

My Emissions worked closely with UEFA, Just Eat Takeaway.com, and world-renowned caterers Delaware North to bring healthy and sustainable food choices to fans at Wembley Stadium.

Given the time constraints, we needed to make the calculations as easy as possible.

Working directly with Delaware North, we completed the calculations automatically using an existing integration with their kitchen management platform, Kafoodle.

…For Delaware North’s Lowest Carbon Menu Ever

With calculations done, the chef team created their lowest carbon menu ever, working to create a high number of low carbon options with all dishes given A-C ratings except one, which was rated E.

My Emissions simple A–E rating Carbon labels were then added to menu boards, so fans could make informed, sustainable choices.

The emissions saved from just 3,000 people choosing a chicken burger over a beef burger at Saturday’s final would power Wembley Stadium for 90 minutes.

Instant Carbon Assessments for Fan Festival Food Trucks

In addition to the Champions League Final, My Emissions carbon labelled all the menus for the ‘Champions Festival’ – a four-day football fan event for all the family.

This included food trucks at four iconic London sites, including Trafalgar Square and Regent’s Street.

The challenge was collecting recipe information from the 25+ vendors and we knew we had to make the solution as easy as possible.

To get around this, My Emissions used its new ‘Measure in Minutes’ technology, including a powerful AI recipe generator, to get instant carbon ratings using only the menus.

Food trucks were given the chance to correct the recipes, before carbon labels were added to all the UEFA menu boards.

… With All Food Served in Notpla’s Sustainable Packaging

All food – at both Wembley Stadium and the Champions Festival -was served in Earthshot prize winner Notpla’s seaweed-lined, sustainable packaging.

The packaging included a QR code for fans to take part in an educational quiz about food sustainability, with the opportunity to win tickets during next year’s competition.

My Emissions won the €45,000 Champions Innovate prize for its work carbon labelling the UEFA Champions League Final 2024.
