Just Eat Takeaway.com wanted to improve transparency of food emissions, raise awareness and help some of its 90 million consumers make more informed, sustainable choices.

With an astonishing 984 million orders processed in 2022 across all of its brands, Just Eat Takeaway.com recognised it had a unique opportunity to lead the way in making the global takeaway industry more sustainable. They chose My Emissions to help them get there.

You may be more familiar with one of the regional brands, including Just Eat, Thuisbezorgd.nl, Grubhub, Skip the Dishes and Menulog.

Challenge & Solution: Helping Takeaway Tackle Sustainability

Just Eat Takeaway.com partnered with My Emissions in 2023 for a two-phase carbon labelling trial.

They wanted a carbon labelling solution that was (1) simple for restaurants to adopt and (2) provided actionable insights to help reduce carbon emissions.

My Emissions calculated the carbon footprint of menu items at several independent restaurants in Brighton, before displaying its easy-to-understand ‘A-E’ traffic light ratings on the Just Eat app during a 12-week trial from March-May, 2023.

In Phase 2 (September 2023) the trial – which is still live – was expanded to the corporate lunch sector, with similar carbon labelling rolled out to its Just Eat for Business platform, a flexible workplace food solution in London.

My Emissions worked with more than 10 restaurant partners, including  Wahaca, Gallio, and K10 enabling customers to make more informed food choices for their corporate lunches.
You can read more about the trials on Just Eat’s website.

Restaurants and consumers both reported increased awareness of the impact different foods can have on the environment. The majority of customers were in favour of carbon labelling, welcoming the transparency carbon labels provided.

Restaurants praised My Emissions’ comprehensive insights into the carbon footprint of dishes, saying the trial helped them develop knowledge about their menus’ carbon impact, encouraging them to consider the environmental impact of food used in dishes.
