My Emissions Helps Honestly Tasty Reduce Product Emissions by 65% in 3 Months

Working with the My Emissions team has allowed us to take a data-driven look at our carbon hotspots and find effective ways in reducing them. We’ve made fantastic progress by reducing the carbon of our gournay-style cheese alternative by 65%. This is a huge first step for us.

Who are Honestly Tasty?

Honestly Tasty brings together traditional cheese making techniques with fresh thinking to make award-winning plant-based cheese loved by vegans and non-vegans alike.

Their range of cheeses, Bree, Shamenbert, Garlic & Herb and an award-winning Blue, are available via Ocado, in Marks & Spencer, Planet Organic and at over 70 independent mainland UK stores. They also feature on menus at leading plant-based pizzeria, Purezza and Pied-À-Terre, London’s longest-standing Michelin-starred fine dining restaurant.

Challenge & Solution

Honestly Tasty want to create plant-based cheeses that have the lowest possible impact on the planet. Lowering their environmental impact is therefore at the forefront of their product development.

Our solution was to complete detailed Product Carbon Assessments for their best-selling products.

This gave them granular insights into the emissions of their recipes and across their entire supply chain. They could compare products, identify opportunities to decarbonise and track emissions reduction progress.

Results: Reducing Product Emissions by 65%!

Being plant-based, Honestly Tasty’s cheeses enjoy mainly low carbon footprints: Their Blue is B-rated, with a 58% lower carbon footprint than its dairy equivalent. Both its Bree and Sham cheeses have a B-rating.

However their Herbi only achieved a C-rating. The culprit: the cashew nut, an ingredient that often has high value chain emissions.

With a clear understanding of GHG emissions hotspots across their core products, Honestly Tasty started developing a newversion of their Gourney-style, Garlic & Herb cheese nut-free.

The new Garlic & Herb was rated ‘A’ on the My Emissions’ A-E rating scale, with a 65% lower carbon footprint than the original ‘Herbi’ product. It also recorded 77.7% lower carbon emissions than an equivalent dairy cheese.

Alongside a lower carbon footprint, redevelopment meant Honestly Tasty was also able to make their products more accessible to customers with allergies.

Honestly Tasty are in continued cooperation with My Emissions to identify further opportunities to reduce the carbon footprint of their products.
