How The FSC Group calculated emissions for 250+ food-on-the-go products in 3 months

“At FSC, we are committed to providing a complete Sustainability strategy for all our clients. My Emissions play a very important part in this by providing a platform that fits into our Agile development process, allowing carbon impact to be calculated early in any design stage.

We can include carbon footprint as a development discussion, evaluate how ingredients can be selected to reduce it, and ultimately support on-pack carbon labelling.”

About The FSC Group

The FSC Group manages the food offering for well-known brands such as Waterstones, Dunelm, National Trust, and Shell. They wanted My Emissions to help them assess and carbon label the Scope 3 emissions of their food-on-the-go products, in line with their commitment to provide a complete sustainability strategy for all their clients.

The award-winning family business has a wide product range ranging from sandwiches, sweet and savoury baked items and hot foods, to chilled snacks, smoothies and juices and has over 30 years’ experience creating and delivering bespoke food-on-the-move solutions internationally.

Challenge & Solution: Scalable Solution to measure and Reduce Scope 3 Emissions

Sustainability is at the heart of The FSC Group’s mission: they have carbon neutral operations (Scope 1 & 2 emissions) in 2023 and are passionate about driving down the total environmental impact of their business in line with the UN’s ‘Race to Zero’ campaign.

Aware that the majority of its emissions are Scope 3 (indirect emissions coming from their value and supply chain), The FSC Group urgently needed to quantify the carbon impact of their product range.

Starting with its UK products, this meant assessing more than 250 items currently on sale, as well as the hundreds of new products in development.

The goal was not just to measure emissions, but to set a strategic future-looking approach: continuously reporting and reducing Scope 3 emissions.

Waterstones Cafe have added the My Emissions carbon label to all their food-on-the-go products.

Results: Integrating Carbon Into New Product Development

In just 3 months, My Emissions and The FSC Group created and implemented a comprehensive and robust solution: a bespoke scalable system to assess and reduce the carbon footprint of their entire ranges enabling:

> Automated carbon assessments.

> Detailed insights enabling emission reduction.

> Carbon labelling on consumer-facing products.

> Leveraging emissions knowledge in New Product Development.

My Emissions built a seamless technical integration with The FSC Group’s product lifecycle software partner, Point74. This enables automated carbon assessments of their entire range.

This not only streamlines the carbon data collection process, but also ensures that emissions data is automatically integrated into The FSC Group’s product development process.

Using the My Emissions platform, The FSC Group benefits from powerful insights to help reduce their products’ emissions – breaking down product emissions into individual components: ingredients, packaging, processing and transport.

The FSC Group has integrated individually branded carbon labels into the packaging and in-store displays for some of their partner sites, including Waterstones’ cafes and on Stena Line Ferries. This provides customers with vital transparency on the carbon footprint of their food choices.

Future Plans: Leveraging Emissions Knowledge for New Product Development

The FSC Group envisions a future where sustainability is ingrained in every aspect of their operations.

They are already using their emissions data to inform new product development, placing sustainability alongside cost, nutrition and taste during the concept and development stage.

At FSC, we are committed to assessing all recipes and putting carbon footprint information on pack so that the consumer has an informed choice. By making this visible, we are intentionally inviting customers to engage and question what impact food makes.

As consumers become more aware, there will be a natural drive to reduce impact during the product development stage. In this way, sustainability will become as natural a discussion point as nutrition is today.
